2018 WDSF GrandSlam Standard Rimini I The Quarterfinal

Nine years after a GrandSlam was held in Rimini, ITA, for the first and last time until 2018, the premier Series in DanceSport returned to the Adriatic resort town. This time with both disciplines and - as the Italians say - "allo grande." At an imposing venue, in the "Blue Arena" at the Rimini Fair, the 92 Standard couples outdid themselves in a setting that looked every bit as perfect as those seen on "Dancing with the Stars." The top two couples in the GrandSlam Ranking would be able to confirm that Rimini as a DanceSport destination has evolved much since 2009. That was the year they finished 14th (Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova) and 21st (Francesco Galuppo and Debora Pancini). But so have they! After an inspired final, Dmitry and Olga were able to celebrate their ninth GrandSlam victory in succession - in total they have 16 - and they are looking forward to dance in Stuttgart, GER, next for number ten. The first runners-up were Francesco and Debora, putting in another high-scoring performance after their last exploit in Taipei City. Second runners-up were Alexey Glukhov - Anastasia Glazunova, RUS, who made the third podium of their career. 2018 WDSF European Youth Latin Sochi | RUS

Top-level DanceSport in contrasting disciplines marked the weekend of 24 and 25 February in Sochi, RUS. Fans flocked by the thousands to the Ice Cube, the curling venue of the 2014 Winter Games. 
Anastasia Titkova, the International Liaison Officer of the All Russian Federation for DanceSport and Rock 'n' Roll, put it all into perspective, when she posted on Facebook: "Four years ago, at right about this time, the Winter Olympics took place in Sochi! Now we have our own Olympics here. We were all together again. Rock ‘n’ Roll was scheduled on day one. The European Championship Standard Formation and the European Youth Latin ran side-by-side on day two. 50 couples danced in the first round of the 2018 European Youth Latin, with the overall level considered higher than ever before. After every round thereafter, the adjudicators found it increasingly challenging to discard couples from advancing to the next one. That is why the quarterfinal was danced with 25 and the semi-final with 13! In the final, however, it came down to six couples only – and to four going to battle over the medals between them: two representing Moldova and two representing Russia. 2018 WDSF European Standard | The Quarterfinal

The 2018 edition of the European DanceSport Championship Standard brought 61 couples from 30+ countries to the Tivoli Congress Centre. Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova continued where they had left off in the last competition they danced in. On 10 December 2017 they made it to the highest echelon of the podium in the GrandSlam Standard Final in Shanghai, CHN. Just nine weeks later they ended up in the same enviable position at the 2018 European Standard. Winning their third consecutive continental title of their career, they swept the numerous audience off their seats for a standing ovation. It was a great championship and the first one streamed live through the new platform DanceSport Total | DST. An eleven-camera production with full graphics plus interviews with the protagonists! Last year’s GrandSlam Standard Final will forever be remembered as the last duel between the eternal opponents Simone Segatori – Annette Sudol, GER, and Dmitry Zharkov – Olga Kukikova, RUS, where the former ended up on top. From there it was total dominance by the Russians in four GrandSlam legs of the 2017 Series as well as in the World Championship held here in China back in September. Even though they had made the announcement to change to the Professional Division, Simone and Annette have not yet danced any competitions there and, as the #2 in the GrandSlam Ranking, would be entitled to dance in this Standard “Showdown Shanghai.” But they have not entered. Something which allows another German couple to put in its first appearance in this GrandSlam Standard Final: Tomas Fainsil and Violetta Posmetnaya. There are four more newcomers to the most exclusive competition in all of DanceSport: Russians Evgeny Nikitin - Anastasia Miliutina and the Chinese wild card couple Qiu Yuming - Wei Liying. 2017 WDSF GrandSlam Final Latin

What sets the GrandSlam Latin Final in Shanghai, CHN, apart from the rest of the top-tier competitions on the DanceSport calendar are three factors. It is the most strictly invitational competition there is, with entry reserved to the 12 top couples in the GrandSlam Ranking, couples having danced in minimum four out of the five regular legs in the Series. It is also the shortest and most compact competition. Extending over only three rounds, it starts at 7:30 p.m. with the first and concludes not even three hour later with the last round and the awards presentation. Finally, it is its place in the calendar: for virtually all the participating couples it is the last competition of the year. A fact which brings about a special atmosphere – more relaxed than elsewhere – even though the fight is about the highest prize money awarded in the Series. In addition to the 12 couples from abroad, the organisers get to invite the best couple from China as a wild card, making it a contest between the best Latin dancers of the world’s most populous country against the best of the rest of the world. In the not too distant future, and if current tendencies should prevail, China could eventually keep the upper hand. The defending GrandSlam Champions did not make it to Shanghai. Gabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus , MDA, notified WDSF and the organisers of their decision not to dance the Final this year. Reasons were not given. Nobody among the other finalists knows what could have led them to withdraw. Maybe – after Gabriele’s history-making marriage proposal on the floor at the 2017 World Latin in Vienna, AUT, three weeks ago – they decided to elope. To make their story even more wildly romantic! Who knows? In any case, if they should be on their honeymoon somewhere, we hope they will enjoy it. Their absence opens new perspectives for the other couples here. First for Konstantin Gorodilov and Dominika Bergmannova, EST, who got a last minute-invitation to take the place of Gabriele and Anna in this year’s “Final Showdown in Shanghai.” But then each and every one of the 13 Latin couples could stand to benefit, one way or another, from a shoo-in places available in the semi-final, in the final and on the podium.
